Plumbing repairs and installations

Plumbing problems rarely arrive at a convenient time. A dripping tap, a toilet that will not flush or a slow leak under the sink may seem minor, but water has a habit of finding the most expensive place to cause damage.

Know what to look for

Plumbing warning signs worth acting on

Damp patches or stains

Discoloured plaster, bubbling paint or musty smells near pipes, floors or ceilings can point to a hidden leak.

A water meter that moves when nothing is on

If you have a meter, a reading that keeps changing with every tap off can suggest a leak somewhere on the property.

Persistent low pressure

Pressure issues can be caused by blocked fittings, partially closed valves, scaled pipework or problems with the supply.

Noisy pipes

Banging, humming or whistling can indicate loose pipework, pressure issues or faulty valves.

Practical guidance

Good to know

Know where your stopcock is
Locate your main stopcock now and check that it turns. In an emergency, shutting off the water quickly limits damage.
Unvented cylinders need qualified installers
Unvented hot water cylinders hold water under pressure and must be installed and commissioned by suitably qualified people. Ask what qualifications an installer holds.
Insurance and leaks
If a leak has caused damage, contact your home insurer promptly and keep photos and invoices. Policies differ on what they cover.
Plumbing and heating overlap
Some jobs involve both. Gas appliances, including boilers, must only be worked on by Gas Safe registered engineers.

How it works

How a plumbing enquiry works

  1. Tell us what is happening

Describe the problem, where it is and how long it has been happening. Photos or short videos help a lot: reply to our acknowledgement email to send them.

  2. Find the cause

The source of the problem is identified so that the repair addresses the cause as well as the symptom.

  3. Agree the work

You are told what is needed and what it is likely to involve before work starts.

  4. Fix and check

The repair is carried out, systems are tested and the area is left tidy.

Questions

Plumbing: frequently asked questions

Is it worth repairing a dripping tap?

Usually, yes. A constant drip wastes water and can damage the basin. Often a worn washer or cartridge is the cause, but in some cases replacing the tap is more practical.

Why is the water pressure low in my house?

It can come from the mains supply, a partly closed valve, blocked fittings, scaled pipework or a problem with your cylinder or tanks. A short investigation usually identifies the cause.

Can you fit appliances such as washing machines?

Connecting washing machines and dishwashers to existing supply and waste is normally straightforward. Tell us what you need when you enquire.

Do you also do commercial plumbing?

Commercial enquiries are welcome. Tell us about the premises and any access or out-of-hours requirements.
