Boiler repairs

Boiler repairs and fault finding

A boiler that stops working is stressful, especially in cold weather. Many faults have straightforward causes, but some are unsafe to ignore. Knowing what you can check, and when to stop and call a professional, saves time and avoids risk.

What we can help with

Boiler repairs: the jobs we take on

Describe what your boiler is doing, any fault code on the display and the make and model if you know it. That helps us understand how urgent the problem is.

  • No heating or no hot water
  • Low or dropping boiler pressure
  • Radiators cold at the top or bottom
  • Noisy boilers, including banging and kettling sounds
  • Leaks from the boiler or connected pipework
  • Ignition and pilot light faults
  • Fault codes on the boiler display
  • Pumps, valves, diverters and thermostats

Know what to look for

Common boiler problems

Pressure keeps dropping

Falling pressure can suggest a leak somewhere in the system, an expansion vessel issue or a faulty pressure relief valve. Repeatedly topping up without finding the cause is not a fix.

No hot water or no heating

Possible causes include thermostat or programmer settings, airlocks, diverter valve faults, pump failure or a fault inside the boiler. The cause often needs proper diagnosis.

Kettling or banging noises

Limescale or sludge restricting flow can make a boiler noisy and cause overheating. It is worth investigating rather than living with the noise.

Radiators with cold spots

Cold at the top often means trapped air. Cold at the bottom can indicate sludge. Cold all over can point to a circulation or valve issue.

Practical guidance

Simple checks you can safely do first

Check the pressure gauge
Most combi boilers should sit between about 1 and 2 bar when cold. Check your manual, because ranges vary by model.
Check controls and power
Make sure the thermostat is calling for heat, the programmer is on and batteries are fresh. Check that the boiler has electrical power.
Check your gas supply
If your gas hob also does not work, there may be a supply issue. If you smell gas, follow the safety advice on this page immediately.
Do not remove the boiler casing
Boilers contain gas and electrical components. Opening one up is a job for a qualified engineer, not a DIY fix.
Servicing
Manufacturers commonly recommend annual servicing, and some warranties depend on it. Check your boiler's paperwork.

How it works

How a boiler repairs enquiry works

  1. Describe the fault

Tell us the boiler make and model, what it is doing, any fault code and how long it has been happening.

  2. Diagnosis

The fault is diagnosed properly before parts are replaced, so you are not paying for guesses.

  3. Clear options

You are told what is wrong, what a repair involves and, where relevant, whether replacement may be better value.

  4. Repair and test

The repair is carried out and the boiler is tested. You are told what was done and any follow-up that is needed.

Questions

Boiler repairs: frequently asked questions

My boiler has no heating or hot water. Is it an emergency?

It is certainly urgent for many households, particularly in winter or where vulnerable people live at home. Mark your enquiry as urgent and give as much detail as you can. If you smell gas or an alarm is sounding, treat it as an emergency and follow the safety advice above.

Should I repair or replace an older boiler?

It depends on the fault, the boiler's age and condition and whether parts are available. A one-off repair to a boiler that is otherwise reliable can be good value. Repeated faults on an ageing boiler may justify replacement.

Can I top up my boiler pressure myself?

Many combi boilers have a filling loop for this, and your manual shows how. If the pressure keeps falling, there is likely a leak or fault that needs professional attention.

Do you repair all boiler makes?

Tell us the make and model when you enquire so we can tell you whether we can help. We would rather tell you honestly than take on work we cannot do properly.
