Boiler installation

Boiler installation and replacement

Choosing a new boiler is a long-term decision. The right boiler, correctly sized and sensibly controlled, can make a home more comfortable and cheaper to run. The wrong choice can be noisy, wasteful or struggle to meet demand.

Know what to look for

When it may be time to replace a boiler

Frequent breakdowns

If call-outs are becoming regular and repair bills are rising, replacement may be better value than continued repairs.

Age and availability of parts

Older boilers can be less efficient and spare parts may become harder to source. Your installer can advise based on the specific model.

Rising bills with no change in use

A boiler losing efficiency can cost more to run, even if your habits have not changed.

Noise, leaks or unreliable hot water

Banging, whistling, dripping or inconsistent hot water can all indicate a boiler or system at the end of its practical life.

Practical guidance

Good to know before you choose a boiler

Combi, system or regular?
Combi boilers heat water on demand and need no cylinder, which suits many smaller homes. System and regular boilers work with a hot water cylinder and can suit larger homes with higher hot water demand. The best choice depends on your property and usage.
Size matters, but bigger is not better
An oversized boiler can cycle on and off and run less efficiently. Outputs should be matched to the property rather than chosen by habit.
Controls make a difference
A modern boiler paired with good controls, such as room thermostats, programmers and radiator valves, can improve comfort and efficiency.
Your existing system
Sludge and debris in older systems can damage a new boiler. Ask how the existing pipework and radiators will be assessed, cleaned or protected.
Warranty terms
Manufacturer warranties vary, and some depend on correct installation, commissioning and servicing. Ask to see the terms in writing for any boiler you are quoted for.

How it works

How a boiler installation enquiry works

  1. Tell us about your home and heating

Property type, number of bathrooms, current boiler type and any problems you have noticed help us give sensible advice from the start.

  2. Survey and recommendations

The existing system and proposed boiler location are looked at, and suitable options are explained, including any additional work the installation may need.

  3. A clear written quote

You receive the proposed boiler, controls, included work and extras clearly set out, so quotes can be compared fairly.

  4. Installation and handover

The boiler is installed and commissioned, the old equipment is removed and you are shown how to use the controls and where to find the paperwork.

Questions

Boiler installation: frequently asked questions

How long does a boiler installation take?

A straightforward like-for-like replacement is often completed in a day or two, but relocating a boiler, changing the type, or upgrading pipework and controls takes longer. Ask for the expected duration in your quote.

Do you recommend a particular boiler brand?

Recommendations should fit your home, your budget and the support available for the product. We would rather explain the options than push a single brand.

Will I be without heating and hot water during the installation?

Usually only for the duration of the work, though this depends on the job. Ask what to expect, especially in winter or if the property is let to tenants.

What should I check before hiring any boiler installer?

Check their Gas Safe registration, ask what is included in the quote, how the old system will be treated, how the boiler will be commissioned and what paperwork you will receive.
